2 Beach Balloon Detachment

No. 2 Beach Balloon Detachment was formed in the first week of June 1943, with personnel mostly from No. 975 Balloon Squadron at El Firdan in the Canal Zone. The establishment was 1 officer and 19 airmen. The Commanding Officer was F/O Cahill.

On 14th August 1943 they were operating a balloon barrage at Augusta with No. 2 Port Balloon Detachment when 975 Squadron were ordered to take over. They ceased operating in Augusta, and 975 Squadron were to re-equip them “for future operations”.  On 9th September they ceased to be attached to 975 Squadron and were attached to 972 Squadron, which was based in Messina.
